An Art Auction Benefiting the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter
Fresh StART is the signature fundraising event of the year for the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter (NWAWS). It perfectly aligns with the mission and programs of the NWAWS as advocates incorporate art as a therapeutic process to help clients (victims), both adult and children, connect with the emotions they have suppressed as a result of abuse they have suffered. Art is a channel for self-identification and for developing self-awareness and a voice.

Stacy Bates is a native Arkansas, art teacher, and illustrator who creates black-and-white pen-and-ink illustrations that combine her two favorite styles–drawing and printmaking–which results in a vintage-esque imagery. Her style and use of hatching and cross-hatching often resembles that of a woodcut print and includes political or thought-provoking symbols throughout.
A few of her recent works include a female fairy tale portrait series that focuses on the role and the strength of the women in those stories, as well as displaying the masks they hide behind. Along with that completed series, she has started creating an animal rights series that exhibits some of the many animals in our world that face the threat of extinction. In this series, many of the animals are humanized to connect our world with their harsh realities.
