Jackie’s Story:

Jackie (age 30) and her two children came to our safe home after Jackie had left her abusive boyfriend. Jackie’s boyfriend was very physically abusive. He would kick her in the head, hit her in the ribs, burn her and sexually assault her. She was terrified to leave, but her mother convinced her that she could do it for herself and for her two boys.

About Jackie’s Piece, Love Growth:

Jackie painted a picture of her life now. She said the flowers and sky symbolized warmth and safety. Jackie says that since she’s been in shelter, her and her children have finally been able to sleep peacefully and that they are no longer scared to do things.

Meagan’s Story:

Meagan (age 32) was married to her abuser for 8 years. Her husband would hit her where the bruises would not be easily seen by others, such as her head and ribs.  He would tell her that no one else would ever want her, and he often threatened to kill her. Meagan was terrified to leave. Meagan had a long time friend who cared for her very much, and her friend told her that her abuser’s rage had escalated too much for him to ever change, and that it was not safe for her and her children. Meagan and her children were able to safely leave her abuser and they sought support through our outreach program.

Tony’s Story:

Tony (age 35) came to shelter with his wife and their children after one of the children were sexually assaulted by a “friend” that the family was living with. While in-shelter, Tony and his wife were able to begin healing their family and took steps to build their relationship as a family.

About Tony’s Piece, At Peace:

Tony loves being outdoors. He says the place he painted is somewhere that brings him peace, and that everything there feels calm. He hopes one day soon his family will that way too.

Lisa’s Story:

When Lisa (age 47) first joined our outreach support group, she was very quiet and spent a lot of time listening to other survivors in the group. As time went on, Lisa grew more confident, and she is now comfortable sharing her personal journey with others. Lisa was married to her abusive, alcoholic husband for 20 years. He hit her and berated her almost every day. One day, her abuser turned violent towards their teenage son and threatened his life with a gun. Lisa had lived with the abuse when it was directed towards her, but she did not want her son to experience the physical violence that she had. Lisa’s coworker and friend referred her to our organization and Lisa was able to safely leave her abuser.

About Lisa’s Piece, Overcoming Obstacles:

Lisa painted shapes to represent obstacles in her life. Her painting is a reminder that she is strong and that she has conquered difficult trials on her journey towards a life free of violence.

Finn’s Story:

Finn’s parents were often called the perfect couple. Finn’s father was handsome and charming. His mother was fun and outgoing. Behind closed doors, Finn’s father was controlling, jealous and physically abusive. Over time, the abuse escalated and his father’s abusive behaviors started spilling out from behind the closed doors of their family home. Finn’s mother left after a particularly explosive incident at their family home. Finn (age 12) remembers nights when he and his sister would wake up to sound of their parents fighting and things in their home being broken. Finn says that he tried really hard to keep his sister distracted by playing games and watching videos.

About Finn’s Piece, Basketball:

Finn’s favorite activity with his mom and sister is playing basketball. He likes spending fun, quality time with them and he feels safe after living violence free for over two years.

Tommy’s Story:

Tommy came to shelter with his brother and mother. They had been living with a longtime friend of Tommy’s mother after Tommy’s grandmother had passed away. The friend began abusing Tommy’s mother as well as making threats towards Tommy and Tommy’s brother. After a violent incident in which the abuser had been drinking, Tommy’s mother was physically abused in front of him and his brother. The small family fled and Tommy’s mother wasn’t sure where to turn. The first night, they slept in their family car. The next day, Tommy’s mother called our hotline and spoke with an advocate. They were provided safe shelter and during their stay, Tommy’s mother successfully secured a safe and permanent home for the family.

About Tommy’s Piece, Cave:

Tommy painted a cave. Tommy’s family often struggled financially and they were not able to take a family vacation like those that he sometimes heard about from his class mates in school. After leaving her abuser, Tommy’s mom was able to take the family camping at Devil’s Den State Park. Tommy saw a cave for the first time, and he loves them! He can’t wait to go on another vacation to explore and discover more exciting things.
