Highlight #5-We Answered 1800 Crisis Calls in 2015

Our crisis line rings every day. Even on the holidays.

Last year, our advocates and volunteers took a total of 1800 crisis calls. When compared to all the calls we answered, over 80% of our phone calls each day were from victims of violence or their families who are seeking our services. Our commitment to Northwest Arkansas is to always be available to take those calls, 24/7/365.

Domestic abuse does not take a break for holidays or weather. It happens in our community on a daily basis whether we admit it or not. The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey[1]  found that more than 1 in 16 women and 1 in 20 men experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in the year prior to their survey.

If we compare those numbers with our NWA population of an estimated 500,000 people, we would expect that over 25,000 individuals were abused by intimate partners last year alone.

Thankfully the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter has a service that can help. Anyone can contact our crisis line to receive support, make plans for safety, or simply share their story. We welcome these calls because it means abused individuals are reaching out for the help they need and our hope is that we can assist each person as they move toward a violence free life.

More information about the hotline calls we took in 2015:

  • 106 callers were referred to us by law enforcement.
  • 111 people were referred by a media source.
  • At least 5 people found our information in the phonebook–a service we are required to provide under state law.
  • 268 people called on behalf of a friend or family member who was a victim of domestic abuse.
  • On average, a hotline caller had 2 dependents.
  • 30 people were referred by a local hospital or medical facility.
  • 50% of people had never contacted us before.

Highlight #12-Awareness & Outreach

Awareness events and activities are some of the most important things we do at NWAWS. We want to make sure that the community knows that we exist and also how to seek services or get involved with our programs if they are interested.

In 2015, we participated in more than 130 different community presentations, booths, and trainings reaching over 7,500 people in Northwest Arkansas. In addition, we were also featured in the media at least 122 times last year for an estimated reach of 195,000!

Perhaps one of the most fun things we did last yeChampions in Heels 2015ar was Champions in Heels—a men’s relay race (in high heels) to raise awareness about domestic violence in our community. This was our second year doing the Champions event and our runners and attendees had a blast. Sara Lilygren, Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs at Tyson Foods was our honorary chair. She helped judge our walk-off competition and cheered on the teams as they raced. We are thankful for the commitment of everyone who helped plan the event and all of those who attended and raced.

Mark your calendar for 2016-Champions In Heels is scheduled for April 23.

Awareness about domestic violence does not happen on its own. If you are interested in volunteering to help with outreach events or would like for us to come talk with your team about domestic abuse and our services, please contact Amber at alacewell@nwaws.org.

Beginning today and continuing for the next 15 days, we will highlight some of the great things that happened with NWAWS during 2015. We hope you enjoy reminiscing with us and we look forward to getting you engaged again this year.

Highlight #1-BFF

Bentonville Film Festival (BFF) was a fun time for all of Northwest Arkansas, but especially for clients and staff at NWAWS. Thanks to one of our corporate sponsors, Mars, Inc., several of our clients were able to take a day to relax, enjoy the Festival’s offerings, and spend some quality time with other successful women who could give them encouragement and hope in a unique setting.

During BFF, we even had a special group of kids from Elkins Design run a lemonade stand that raised $259 for NWAWS!

This day would not have been possible without all the support from others as well, especially Catapult Marketing and Dillard’s (Pinnacle Hills). Our clients enjoyed lunch catered by Crabby’s and received royal treatment by and everyone at the VIB Lounge Presented by Dove (Dove, TRESemmé, L’Oreal Paris, HARD CANDY, Paris Presents, Inc., Colgate Optic White, Constellation Brands, Cover Girl, and Always).

After the festival, we also received leftover product that stocked our shelves including coffee and makeup. We were even gifted some left over furniture-some that we were able to use in shelter and the remainder that we sold in our Thrift Store. Each item we do not have to purchase puts more money in our pockets to be able to serve our clients.

Thanks to everyone for making BFF 2015 special for NWAWS. We are looking forward to what May 2016 has to offer!

Thank you, Wal-Mart Store Layout!

Representatives from the Wal-Mart Store Layout Division presented the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter with a large donation at their quarterly meeting thanks to their E-VAP program. This group has volunteered countless hours with us over the past year, and they cashed in on their activities in order to provide a financial gift as well.

The gift covers the cost for a family unit consisting of one adult and two children (our average family size) to live in our facility for an entire month and also provides 10 days of safe shelter for another individual.

Gifts such as this allow us to house individuals at no charge and provide all of their needs–toiletries, clothing, room, and board–while they stay in our facility. If you would like to join our community of supporters by making a financial gift, you may click here to learn more about donation options or call 479-246-0353 for more information.

If you are a Wal-Mart associate interested in volunteering, please also consider using the VAP program for a financial match to your time contribution. For more information on how the VAP program works, click here. You may contact Sheri Hammond for more information about volunteering or to arrange a project for yourself or a group by emailing her at shammond@nwaws.org.
